The Troup County School System hired a new school board attorney Tuesday and has a recommendation for an open assistant superintendent position.

Greg Ellington was named the school system’s new board attorney, replacing John Taylor, who is retiring after more than four decades representing TCSS.

“I look forward to the opportunity to serve.  John has big shoes to fill.  He’s been a colleague of mine for a long time,” Ellington said. “And so, I know what you’ve come to expect in the way of representation.”

Ellington is a partner at Hall Booth Smith P.C. in Columbus. According to his profile on the HBS website, Ellington is a native of Athens who received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1991 and his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1995.

He is licensed in both Alabama and Georgia and concentrates his practice in the areas of education law, business litigation, tax appeal litigation and medical malpractice defense, according to his profile.

The school system plans to honor Taylor for his years of service at a later date.

Dennis “Chip” Medders, who currently serves as TCSS’ chief HR officer, has been recommended for the position of assistant superintendent, maintenance and operations. Medders’ hire is expected to be approved at Thursday’s meeting.

Derek Pitts, a former TCSS principal, is moving into Medders’ HR role, which he will fill part-time.
