The LaGrange Fire Department is asking citizens to use fireworks safely next week while celebrating the Fourth of July.

According to the National Safety Council, in 2017, eight people were killed and more than 12,000 required medical attention after fireworks-related incidents. 

“Be careful. Know what you’re dealing with. Be in a safe area, don’t stand next to them,” said Mike Webb, public safety officer with the LFD. “Light them and back away. If there’s a malfunction and that thing blows up, there’s a lot of explosive in there.”

Webb also said to make sure you’re in a clear area, away from other houses or powerlines. He said never to let young children handle fireworks and to supervise older children when using them. He also said to never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Webb also said not to light more than one at a time, and not to try to relight a firework that malfunctions. 

“I know everybody wants to see all of them going off at one time, but just light one at at time to keep control of the situation,” Webb said. 

Webb said typically the LFD recommends going to see a professional show, as that’s the safest way to enjoy fireworks this year. However, he said he understands that there may not be any local shows this year. 

Webb also recommended keeping pets in mind since many animals are confused and upset by fireworks.

The NSC also says not to light fireworks in your hand, don’t light them indoors and don’t point them at another person.

It also recommends keeping a bucket of water nearby for any fireworks that don’t go off or in case of fire.
