A man was killed after striking a tractor-trailer on I-85 around 6 a.m. on July 7, Georgia State Patrol confirmed on Tuesday.

Victor Debroux, 56, of Fayetteville, was travelling south in the right lane of the interstate near the exit for Georgia Highway 54, just north of Hogansville. According to GSP, his vehicle struck a tractor-trailer before coming to a stop in the right lane. The tractor-trailer did not stop and fled the scene.

Debroux was conscious immediately after the crash, but after being extracted from his vehicle by emergency medical services suffered cardiac arrest. He was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, where he died.

The crash caused all southbound lanes of I-85 to be blocked, but the highway was cleared around 9 a.m.

GSP is investigating the incident as a possible hit-and-run. Witnesses with information about the crash or the tractor-trailer are encouraged to contact GSP Trooper Brad Turner of the Troup and Harris Counties post.
