Football teams in Georgia will be able to take another step next week.

Beginning on Monday, players will be able to wear helmets for the first time this summer, while all of the other restrictions will remain in place.

The update was posted on the Georgia High School Association’s website on Wednesday following a meeting between executive director Robin Hines and the GHSA sports medicine advisory council.

In a press release, Hines said “schools must sanitize the helmet before and after each workout.”

Hines added that “all previously distributed correspondence is still in place until further notice, especially no use of locker rooms.”

Hines said the GHSA and the advisory council has begun discussions concerning the start of the acclimatization period on July 27, with practice set to begin on Aug. 1.

Callaway, LaGrange and Troup are all scheduled to play preseason games on Aug. 7 and Aug. 14, with the regular season beginning on Aug. 21.

The other fall sports, softball, volleyball, cheerleading and cross country, are also supposed to begin their seasons in August.

Hines said that “recommendations and restrictions are fluid and subject to change. Safety must be our top priority.”
