The Callaway High softball team took a test run in preparation for a new season that begins this weekend.

Callaway and Lamar County faced off in a preseason scrimmage on Tuesday, giving both teams a chance to knock some of the rust off before they begin playing for keeps.

Lamar County, which made it to the Class AA state finals

in Columbus last season, came away with the 12-4 victory, although it was nonetheless a productive day for Callaway.

Head coach Robyn McCann wanted to get everyone some time on the field, and that mission was accomplished.

“We played everybody,” McCann said. “My whole infield, we moved them around completely to see who we want to put where. We just moved people around, tried to get everybody an at-bat.”

Faith Horton, Callaway’s most experienced pitcher, got the start, and Miya Lawton and Dara O’Neal also pitched, with O’Neal tossing a scoreless inning.

Callaway did some nice things offensively, scoring two runs in the third inning and two more runs in the fourth.

In the third inning, Chaple Butler had a base hit and scored on a wild pitch, and McKenzie Rhodes had an RBI single.

In the fourth inning, Mikayla Speer had an RBI single, Lawton had a double, and Aaliyah Morman knocked in a run with a double.

Callaway will begin its season in the Callaway Classic this weekend at Shuford Fields, with two games on Friday and two games on Saturday.
