After a winning performance on Friday, the Callaway High softball team met its match a day later.

Competing in the Callaway Classic at Shuford Fields, Callaway beat Trinity 18-3 before falling to LaGrange Academy 4-2 and Brookstone 13-1.

Callaway was the host team for the event that went off without a hitch, with each of the participants playing at least two games.

Callaway opened with a bang against Trinity.

After Trinity scored three runs in the top of the first inning, Callaway took control and finished the game with 18 consecutive runs.

The Lady Cavaliers banged out nine hits while walking 11 times in a game shortened to three innings because of the run rule.

Chaple Butler and Alora Vetsavong each had two hits and an RBI, Tyterria Godwin had a double and two RBIs, Lindsay Cofield, Mya Lawton, Faith Horton each had a hit and two RBIs, McKenzie Rhodes had a hit, and Aaliyah Morman drove in a run.

Horton pitched a three-inning complete game.

Looking to improve to 2-0, Callaway staged a late rally against LaGrange Academy on Saturday, but the comeback fell short.

Callaway was trailing 4-0 when it pushed two runs across in the top of the sixth inning.

Vetsavong had an RBI triple and Cofield drove in a run with a bunt, and the tying runs were on base when LaGrange Academy pitcher Amber Corley got an inning-ending groundout.

Butler, Vetsavong, Lawson, Mikayla Speer and Godwin had hits for Callaway, and Dara O’Neal pitched six solid innings and was the tough-luck loser.

In Callaway’s final game, it couldn’t get anything going in a 13-1 loss to Brookstone.

Butler, Vetsavong, Cofield and Lawton had Callaway’s hits, and Horton and Lawton handled the pitching duties.
