The high-school football season is still scheduled to begin on Sept. 4, although as the Georgia High School   Association made clear in a statement released on Wednesday, that is subject to change.

Following a weekly meeting with the sports medicine advisory committee, GHSA executive director Robin Hines passed along the latest update.

According to the statement, the GHSA’s “plan as of today is to move forward with the September 4 date for opening football season, as directed by the Board of Trustees.”

As is the case across the country, though, everything can change on a moment’s notice.

“However, it is possible that the start date of September 4 could change based on COVID-19 data,” the statement continued. “As numbers dictate over the next two weeks, a decision will be forthcoming with regard to the football start date.”

The statement added that “the GHSA staff has contingency plans to cover all start and restart scenarios. Our goal continues to be to provide sports and activities for our students as soon as possible with safety being the top priority. There is always a possibility of postponement based on the data and advice from our medical professionals.”

The start date of the regular season has already been pushed back two weeks, and the preseason games were canceled.

As of now, Troup and LaGrange are scheduled to open the season on Sept. 4, while Callaway’s first game is Sept. 11.

Troup will open its season at Harris County, while LaGrange plays its first game under new head coach Matt Napier at Upson-Lee.

Callaway was supposed to open on Sept. 4, but it game against Opelika was canceled after the GHSA moved everything back two weeks.

Callaway is now set to begin its season on Sept. 11 against Troup.

Other fall sports including softball, volleyball and cross country are being played, while the competitive cheerleading season has been pushed back to the winter.
