It’s match day for the Troup High volleyball team.

Troup was supposed to begin its season on Tuesday at Chapel Hill, but that match had to be postponed.

Instead, Troup’s season opener will be on Thursday in Columbus in a tri-match with home-standing Shaw and Pacelli.

It will be the debut for Troup under the direction of new head coach Anna Andrews, who has taken over following the departure of Leigh Bailey, who is now at Callaway.

“They’re great girls,” said Andrews, an assistant coach at Troup the past two seasons. “They listen well. They’re very coachable, so I’m excited.”

It’s a team led by a veteran group of players including seniors Landen Sheets, Macy Jeter, Savannah Coker, Amauriya Brown and Victoria Finley.

When those players were sophomores, they helped Troup reach the second round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

The returning players will be joined by some newcomers who are hoping to help the program enjoy a successful season.

“We’ve got some girls playing some different positions, so they’re a little nervous going to new spots, but they’re excited to get some game time in,” Andrews said.

One thing Andrews has noticed during summer workouts and preseason practice is that the players are eager and willing to offer their input into the way things should be done.

“One of the girls said hey, can we try one rotation in this, and one rotation in that one, and I said sure,” Andrews said. “This is part of our first games is figuring out what works best. We’ll play around with it and figure out what we need to do. We try to run a real open team. They’re really good about talking to me if they see something they want to try.”

Troup will make its home debut on Tuesday against Brookstone and LaGrange.

LAGRANGE: After a hard-fought loss to open the season, LaGrange will look to put a win on the board on Thursday.

LaGrange will travel cross-town to Callaway High for a pair of matches, including one against the host team.

LaGrange will play Kendrick at 5:30 p.m. before finishing the day with a match against Callaway at 6:30 p.m.

LaGrange began its season on Tuesday at Pacelli in a match that went the full three sets.

LaGrange won the first set 25-17, but Pacelli won the next two sets 25-18 and 15-5 to earn the victory.

CALLAWAY: Callaway opened its season at Harris County on Tuesday, and it lost to Lee County and Harris County.

In the Lee County match, Callaway lost 25-6 and 25-8, and it lost to Harris County 25-12 and 25-8.

Callaway will make its home debut on Thursday, facing Kendrick at 4:30 p.m
