A second student at Long Cane Elementary School has tested positive from COVID-19.

The school posted a social media update to parents on Thursday morning, writing that the school had a second, unrelated case. Based on information the school has, it appears both cases were from exposure away from the school.

Since the return to school, the Troup County School System has had three total positive cases — two at Long Cane Elementary and one at Hollis Hand Elementary.

According to a press release from TCSS that announced the two previous cases, those students were tested Monday and did not return to school. School administrators were notified of the positive test results Wednesday afternoon.

According to the press release, all school staff members, parents of students in the classes, and the entire school families were notified.

Only students and staff members who were in direct contact with the two students have been asked to quarantine for 14 days and monitor symptoms. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, direct contact is within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes with or without a mask.

Per the Troup County School System’s established protocol, the impacted areas of the buildings have been temporarily closed so that the spaces can be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
