A six-vehicle pileup occurred Thursday morning on I-85 in Troup County. According to Georgia State Patrol Post Commander Scott Jeter, drivers involved in the crash said a small, white, unknown vehicle attempted an illegal U-turn through the median, causing cars to brake abruptly.

One person was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center with minor injuries, Jeter said. No serious injuries were recorded. The white vehicle that caused the chain reaction was not present when police arrived.

Jeter said GSP were dispatched around 6:10 a.m.

The six vehicles were traveling south on I-85 near mile marker 9 when the crash occurred.

One of the vehicles involved was a tractor trailer. Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division also responded to the crash. The driver of the tractor trailer had indicated on his logs that he was off duty from midnight on Sept. 1 until 7:15 a.m., but a MCCD sergeant found evidence contradicting that statement. MCCD placed the driver out of service for false logs.

Truck drivers are limited by law from driving more than a certain number of hours to prevent driver fatigue.
