It was a busy Saturday for the Troup High volleyball team.

Troup participated in a tournament in Smiths Station (Ala.) on Saturday, and it played six matches while spending about 12 hours in the gym.

While Troup went 2-4, it won some key matches and finished first in the silver bracket with wins over Callaway and Shaw.

“We won when it counted,” said Troup head coach Anna Andrews.

Even in the matches Troup lost, Andrews was proud of how the players competed.

Most notably, Andrews was excited about what she saw in a loss to Central-Phenix City, which won the gold bracket, and in the win over Shaw, a team that beat Troup earlier this season.

“The team that won the gold bracket was Central-Phenix City, and we played them in a gym with no air conditioning, and between that game and the game against Shaw, it was some of the best volleyball we’ve played,” Andrews said. “It was point-for-point, back-and-forth, rallies were one or two minutes. It was good volleyball.”

Troup continued its season on Tuesday with a pair of matches at Fayette County, and it lost to Central-Carroll and Spalding County.  Central-Carroll and Troup are in the same area, and those teams will meet again in the area tournament.

“We’ll see them again in our area tournament in a few weeks, and we’re hoping to play better,” Andrews said. “They’re on our level, we just weren’t in that game. It happens sometimes.”

Troup will be at home on Tuesday, and it will play LaGrange at 5 p.m., and Fayette County at 7 p.m.
