It was a winning senior day for the Callaway High softball team.

Facing Temple in a Region 5-AA showdown, Callaway eased to a 9-1 victory on Monday afternoon.

After the game, seniors Dara O’Neal, Tyterria Godwin, Lindsay Cofield and Kalye Ann Powell were recognized, and those players had key roles in the win.

O’Neal started on the pitcher’s mound and threw a five-inning shutout, Godwin had two hits, Cofield had two hits and an RBI, and Powell had a base hit and an RBI.

Underclassmen Mya Lawton provided some fireworks of her own with two hits, including a towering solo home run and a two-run double, and Ava Shuford and Alora Vetsavong each had RBI singles.

After O’Neal set Temple down in order in the top of the first, Lawton gave Callaway the lead in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Lawton got a pitch she could handle, and she drove the ball over the left-field fence, and it collided with the Temple team bus.

Callaway added to its lead with two runs in the second inning.

Vetsavong got things started with a double, and Godwin followed with a base hit to put runners on first on third.

Next up was Powell, and her RBI groundout brought Vetsavong home with the second run, and another run scored when O’Neal reached on an error.

Temple threatened in the third inning, but Vetsavong threw a potential base-stealer out at second for the third out.

Temple pushed one run across in the top of the fourth, and Callaway answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Godwin and Powell began the rally with back-to-back singles, and two batters later, Lawton ripped a double to the fence to drive in two runs.

Shuford followed with a two-run single, and Cofield capped the big inning with an RBI hit of her own.

O’Neal set Temple down in the top of the fifth inning, and the game ended at that point because of the run rule.

Callaway finished the regular season with a 2-6 Region 5-AA record, and it will be the number four seed for the region tournament.
