It’ll be a battle of the unbeatens when the Callaway Cavaliers and Haralson County Rebels face off in a Region 5-AA showdown.

Callaway (4-0) and Haralson County (5-0) both boast perfect records, and something will have to give when they meet in Tallapoosa on Friday night.

It’ll be the first of four region games for Callaway, which is looking to win a second consecutive region championship, and the program’s seventh since 2008, all with head coach Pete Wiggins at the helm.

Both teams were off last week, giving them plenty of time to prepare for a game that won’t decide the region title, but will nonetheless play a major role in determining which team will claim the top spot.

Callaway has won the previous six meetings between the two programs, and most of the games were blowouts.

Callaway won 27-13 in 2011, and it has won every other game by at least 33 points.

In 2015, the most recent game between the two teams, Callaway won 40-7.

Peavey, who came to Haralson County in 2017, led the team to 8-3 records in 2018 and 2019, and the Rebels are flying high this year.

Haralson County has won each of its games by double-digit margins, and it trounced Banks County 44-0 on Oct. 9 to improve to 5-0.

Callaway has navigated a challenging schedule without losing a game.

After beating Troup, Harris County and Douglass-Atlanta, Callaway scored a touchdown with seven seconds left to beat Thomas County Central 16-14 on Oct. 9.

After the Haralson County game, Callaway hosts Bremen before finishing the region schedule with games against Temple and Heard County.

Also this week, the Troup Tigers will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Shaw Raiders on Friday night.

Troup (3-3 overall) overwhelmed Kendrick 49-0 last week to win its third consecutive game while improving to 3-1 in Region 2-AAAA.

Shaw comes into the game looking to build on its first victory of the season.

After opening with four straight losses, Shaw (1-4 overall) beat Jordan 37-8 to improve to 1-2 in the region, and a win over Troup would bolster its playoff hopes.

Troup has been rolling since the 0-3 start.

Beginning with a 42-0 victory over Spencer, Troup has won its past three games by a combined score of 144-14.

After the Shaw game, Troup has back-to-back games against Carver and LaGrange before closing the regular season against Jordan.

LaGrange (4-2 overall), which lost to Carver 36-14 last week to fall to 3-1 in region play, is off this week.

LaGrange returns with a home game against Jordan on Oct. 29, and then it’ll be time for the crosstown showdown against Troup on Nov. 13.

LaGrange finishes its regular season against Hardaway on Nov. 19.

In private-school football, Lafayette Christian (3-1) is off this week, and it will begin its region schedule with a home game against Flint River Academy on Oct. 30.
