Johnny Mac Dodgen, 78, of 3440 County Road 278, Five Points, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, surrounded by family.

Mr. Dodgen was born Oct. 13, 1942, in LaGrange, Georgia, son of the late Ambrous Mac Dodgen, Jr. and Martha E. Potate Dodgen.  He was a lifelong member of Standing Rock United Methodist Church where he served as the Sunday School teacher and was a dedicated member of the Standing Rock Community Clubhouse. Mr. Dodgen graduated from LaGrange High School in 1960 and was a team member of the 1958 State Champion Football team and often lamented about his fellow teammates.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a graduate of the University of Alabama, with a Bachelor’s degree in History.  Mr. Dodgen was employed many years as a foreman with Newman Construction Company, was a partner in Waid’s Tire Service and ultimately was self-employed in carpentry well into his 70’s.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert “Bobby” Mac Dodgen.

Survivors include his loving wife, Bonnie D’armond Dodgen, whom he met in 1962 and was reunited with 40 years later and brought home to Standing Rock, Alabama.  Mr. Dodgen is also survived by his sister, Sharon McLaughlin Spriggs of LaGrange, Georgia; son J. “Andy” Dodgen (Kelly) of Powhatan, Virginia; daughter, “Suzi” Dodgen Woodie of LaGrange, Georgia; grandchildren, Caleb, Garrett, and Connor Dodgen, Drew, Emily, and John-Robert Dodgen, Jordan “Mack” Woodie (Rachael), and Matt Woodie (Danielle); stepson, Matt Reeves of Colorado Springs, Colorado; stepdaughters, Kathleen Reeves of Costa Mesa, California and Laura Murphy (Wayne) of New Haven, Kentucky; and stepgrandchildren, Quinn Murphy and Grant Murphy.  Mr. Dodgen also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at Standing Rock United Methodist Church, Standing Rock, Alabama.  Casual and Alabama attire welcomed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Standing Rock Community Clubhouse, c/o Bonnie Dodgen, Treasurer, 3440 County Road 278, Five Points, Alabama 36855.
