Wellstar Health System has received its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech, according to a press release.

The first shipment of the vaccine arrived Wednesday, with a second one expected next week. Wellstar received 3,900 doses in the first shipment, numbers which the Georgia Department of Public Health determines. Georgia received 84,000 doses in the first allocation, the release said.

The vaccine is supposed to reach Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center this coming week, where it will be administered to frontline employees. The vaccine is voluntary for employees.

“We are excited and optimistic about the first COVID-19 vaccine that will be rolling out to our frontline staff and healthcare workers beginning next week,” said Wellstar West Georgia President Coleman Foss, in a statement. “This breakthrough will allow us to keep our team members healthy, as we continue our work of keeping the community healthy. The coming weeks will help set the stage for all of us to bring our community back to a better place through vaccinations and immunity.”
