The Callaway Lady Cavaliers will look to keep their historic season going when they host Washington County in the third round of the Class AA state tournament on Tuesday.

With Saturday’s 66-61 overtime win over Chattooga, Callaway advanced past the second round of the state tournament for the first time in the history of the program.

Now, the Lady Cavaliers are looking to make it to the semifinals for the first time and move a step closer to a possible state championship.

While Callaway beat Chattooga, it had to overcome a difficult first half to make it happen.

After a two-point second quarter, the Lady Cavaliers found themselves trailing 30-16 before rallying in the second half.

“What I’m preaching to them, we’ve got to come out and play,” Martin said. “We can play with anybody. Every team we play, I have to make you understand that you can play with them from the beginning.”

Callaway (15-6), after winning the Region 5-AA championship, beat Union County 72-45 in the first round of the state tournament.

Callaway followed that up with the dramatic win over Chattooga to reach the third round for the first time.

“All the girls, they seem to get along well, and they seem to respond well to coaching,” Martin said. “They respond when I get on them. They try to do what I tell them to do. Just about everything I asked them to do (against Chattooga), they tried their best to do it.”

Washington County (16-1), the top seed from Region 3-AA, has beaten Toombs County (75-45) and Laney (56-50) in the state tournament.

Callaway will try to slow down 5-foot-9 guard Miracle Parker, who scores 20 points per game.
