The goals came fast and furiously for the Troup Tigers.

Facing Carver in a Region 2-AAAA showdown at Callaway Stadium, Troup eased to a 10-0 victory in a game that ended at halftime because of the mercy rule.

Troup improved to 2-1 in the region, and it can strengthen its position in the region with a home win over Jordan on Wednesday.

The Tigers are hoping to earn one of the region’s four spots in the state playoffs.

Troup had no trouble finding the net against Carver, with nine different players scoring.

Leading the way was Bernny Velasquez with two goals, and Bryan Villatoro, Chris Moore, Luis Merida, Yuri Rivera, Trey Ketchum, Sirwan Gardi, Diego Merida and Elijah Robinson each scored one goal.

The 10th and final goal was scored by Robinson, a senior who has been Troup’s goal keeper since his sophomore season.

On senior night, Robinson was given an opportunity to leave the goal and play the field, and he scored the first goal of his high-school career.

“This was probably one of the best games I’ve played since I’ve been in high school,” Robinson said. “I’ve been the keeper ever since my sophomore year.”

When Robinson scored, he was mobbed by his jubilant teammates.

“That energy, that excitement was something I else I couldn’t compare to,” Robinson said. “It was amazing.”

It was an impressive all-around performance for the Tigers, who have an outstanding chance of earning a playoff spot after struggling in region play in recent years.

“We talked about how we’ve improved, and tonight you saw how it could be,” said Troup head coach Eddie Lawson.

While Carver was an overmatched opponent, Troup’s offensive execution was crisp, and Lawson was able to get a lot of players involved.

“When we play games like this, we’re finally in a position where we’ve got quality depth, and we can mix and match and try to find different homes for different players,” Lawson said.
