The sweet smell of coffee roasting is coming to downtown LaGrange.

Jessica Brown and her husband Alex Brown will soon open Sweet Roast Cafe on Bull Street. What was once the front shop of a dance studio is now being renovated into a full-fledged café and bakery.

“I’s so crazy because Alex and I have always said that we want to open our own business,” Brown said. “About two years ago Alex started roasting our coffee beans for us at home. He got a roaster and it went from there.”

All coffee will be locally roasted and ground by Alex.

Additionally, local baker Karen Scobee will add to the menu with her cakes, baked goods, cinnamon rolls and more. Brown added that anyone can come in and order a specialty cake from her as well for wedding, birthdays or events.

“It will be great because it is so hard to drive out of the way and back just to grab coffee,” Brown said. “We just kept saying, ‘LaGrange doesn’t have anything like this so let’s do it.’ I mean why not us? Alex has been the brain and then I have helped get it all together.”

The coffee shop will have a modern industrial vibe and ample seating for study breaks, small groups, date nights and more.

The café will also be open seven days a week.

“What I am really excited about is we have a local artist that will paint a selfie mural on the side of the building,” Brown said. “My idea was I wanted to do a swing on a big peach tree. So it will look like you’re sitting on the swing and you can be holding your coffee.”

Like big city selfie murals out of Nashville, Jessica hopes to curate more business and attraction to downtown and the coffee shop with the mural.

By April they hope to have their doors open, espresso machines running and coffee pouring.

“All the gut work is done,” Brown said. “The plumbers and electricians have come in and done everything. We really just have a few cosmetic things to take care of. We need to put the flooring down and countertops together. It’s basically just installing and painting.”

Brown also hopes to paint an oversized chalk wall for the menu.

“We just super pumped about it and can’t wait to see it all come together,” Brown said. “The whole purpose of this is to bring the community together. We want a place for visitors and locals to come and socialize.”

The coffee shop is located at 115 Bull Street. To keep up with updates and when it will open follow them on Facebook @sweetroastcafe.
