The LaGrange Police Department said Monday in a press release that it’s investigating audio clips of racist comments that were recently shared on social media.

The LPD said it was made aware of the audio clips Saturday.

In the audio recordings, a man’s voice is heard talking. It’s unclear where the conversations took place or who was part of the conversation, but LPD said the recordings originated in September 2020.

“If they did away with the guns, blacks would take over and you’d do away with the blacks,” the man in the audio says. “Like on LaFayette Court, you go down through there and you go to all these different places and you kill every one of them. Women, children, babies — you kill them all. Go to the hospital — kill them all. You do away with the problem…”

The audio then cuts off. It’s unclear who released the audio to the LPD.

“The LaGrange Police Department has been made aware of the concerns shared by many citizens of the City of LaGrange, and shares in these concerns, as these types of comments are unacceptable in any setting, nor will they be tolerated if found to be criminal in nature,” the LPD press release said. “At this time, this is an ongoing investigation and the LaGrange Police Department continues to gather evidence into this matter. Based on the sensitive nature of the racially charged statements that have been made the LaGrange Police Department has conferred with the Troup County District Attorney’s Office to review this case once the investigation is complete. At the conclusion of all interviews and evidence gathering, this case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to review for final decision on criminal charges.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the LPD at (706) 883-2603 or Troup County Crime Stoppers at 706-812-1000.
