Troup County held a groundbreaking on Pegasus Parkway Tuesday morning for a new UGA Cooperative Extension office.

The groundbreaking was held on property located at 2168 Pegasus Parkway. The new building will include a multipurpose space, a teaching kitchen and additional offices. A pavilion out back will also be used for numerous functions as well.

“I think this is an opportunity for us to grow this piece of land,” said County Commission Chairman Patrick Crews. “The county had the foresight, and the citizens agreed with us and voted for the SPLOST. And the money that was raised part of that money in this SPLOST was to purchase this approximately 48 acres that we stand on today. There are things that we can do, and y’all can do and help planning and how we grow this piece of property and things that we put on there.”

County Manager Eric Mosley said the construction will cost around $1 million, all paid for by SPLOST. The current extension office is located near the jail on Sam Walker Drive.

River City Contracting is the contractor for the construction.

“As a citizen of Troup County and raising a family here in Troup County, I value the opportunity and the flexibility in the youth programs that are put into Troup County, and this gives options to my kids growing up on the direction they go,” said Patrick Shivers of River City Contracting. “So not only am I excited to be a part of this team right now, but I’m also excited for what it brings for the future of Troup County.”
