We promise after today that you won’t hear this again, at least for a few months. But today is the day — again — for voters in Troup County to head back to the polls.

Don’t let voter fatigue stop you from participating.

There’s only one item on the ballot, the all-important E-SPLOST election that will determine whether or not the school system has funding for projects it hopes to do over the next five years. Counting capital outlay funding, the Troup County School System plans to use more than $81 million it estimates to collect over the next five years. The projects listed include a brand-new Rosemont Elementary School, but there is work planned at schools all over the county. Rosemont is the biggest project, but far from the only one.

Early voting numbers show that an extremely small portion of the population has cast a ballot in the E-SPLOST election so far. Roughly, 2 percent of Troup County’s population has voted in the election so far. Obviously, a significant chunk of our overall population isn’t old enough to vote yet, but children felt important to include since they are the ones most impacted by this vote, one way or the other.

And to think, about 1300 people are making this very important decision so far.

We’ve probably seen 10-times that many complaints about community projects over the last year — and that might be cutting it short. Some of those comments — good and bad — involve the school system but comments on social media do very little in the large scheme of things, at least when compared to actually casting a ballot.

Regardless of which side of the issue you’re on, we hope you’ll get out and vote Tuesday. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and we’ll have plenty of coverage on our website. Don’t pass up the opportunity to vote.

It’d be a shame for only a few people to make this decision for the population at large.
