People in Troup County are asked to keep their eyes on the skies Wednesday, as there’s a chance of severe weather in the afternoon hours into Thursday morning.

According to Tuesday afternoon’s update from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Troup County is under an enhanced risk for severe weather. Enhanced signifies that multiple severe storms are possible, including a few tornadoes. It’s three out of five on the NWS scale.

That was an update from Tuesday morning, when only western Troup County was under an enhanced risk. At that time, the majority of the county was under a slight risk, which is two out of five on the NWS severe weather scale.

However, the weather service and local meteorologists typically warn not to worry about the shade of color on the map — most important to note is severe weather is possible in Georgia on Wednesday.

“The risk for significant severe weather will increase from west to east Wednesday night into Thursday,” the National Weather Service in Peachtree City wrote on social media. “Tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and heavy rainfall will all be possible. Stay weather aware tomorrow PM into Thursday and have your severe weather plan in place!”

Overall, the southeast is looking at the possibility of a significant weather day.

States to the west, such as Alabama, have a large portion of the state under a “moderate” risk for severe weather, which is four out of five on the NWS scale. The National Weather Service in Birmingham is warning that Alabama could see long-track tornadoes.
