Fred was born in Booneville, Mississippi on July 22, 1929, to Fred L Jones Sr. and Bess Miller Jones.  At Booneville High School he met Sammie Nell Fugitt, the love of his life.  They were married on Sept. 11, 1950.  Sammie passed away in 2016.

Fred, like his father, was a graduate of Georgia Tech Institute of Technology.  He received his degree in Industrial Engineering in 1951 and was a lifetime patron and supporter of his alma mater.

He was with the General Electric Company for 37 years, holding assignments in Schenectady New York, Lynn Massachusetts, DeKalb Illinois, Fort Wayne Indiana and Atlanta Georgia.  He served his country during the Korean War as 1st Lieutenant in the US Army.  He returned to GE after service and spearheaded GE’s drive into expanded sales internationally.  Fred traveled extensively to Europe, South America, Australia and the Middle East.  His last assignment was Regional Manager for Motors and Controls in Atlanta, covering an area from Philadelphia to Miami and Memphis to New Orleans.

After retirement he and Sammie moved to the Family Farm in Harris County Georgia where they lived for almost thirty years.  They then moved to the Vernon Woods Retirement Community in LaGrange.  After Sammie passed away Fred moved to an apartment at the Gables in Historic Hillside LaGrange.  While living in Harris County they were both active in Harris County and LaGrange affairs.  Fred was President of the LaGrange Rotary in their 75th year and he and Sammie were members of the First Methodist Church and Highland Country Club as well as many other civic organizations.  Fred was recognized as an Honorary Alumni of LaGrange College after he and Sammie helped create the Fred and Sammie Jones Scholarship.  Fred was also an avid classic car enthusiast.  He restored Model T Fords and a Thunderbird while he was a member of the local car club.

He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 66 years, Sammie Nell Fugitt Jones, and his loving daughter Louanne.  Fred is survived by his son, Lamar, and wife, Mary, and grandson, Christopher Woliver, and his fiance, Abby Jones, of Atlanta.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021, in the Sanctuary of the LaGrange First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. John Beyers officiating.  A private burial service will be held at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery at Jones Crossroads after the Memorial Service.
