A marathon week continued for the LaGrange High girls’ soccer team, which handled Kendrick 5-1 on Wednesday at Callaway Stadium.

It was the third game during a busy stretch of four games in four days for the Lady Grangers.

LaGrange began the week with 10-0 road win over Carver on Monday, and it fought Auburn (Ala.) to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday, with Sydney Ormsby converting a penalty kick with minutes remaining to pull LaGrange even.

In Wednesday’s game, Kendrick scored an early goal to take the lead, but LaGrange was in control the rest of the way and won 5-1 to improve to 6-1 in Region 2-AAAA.

LaGrange finishes the busy week with a road game against Bremen on Thursday, and that will be a

big-time challenge against one of the top teams in Class AA.

LaGrange, looking to sew up the number two spot in the region, fell behind 1-0 when Kendrick scored a goal less than five minutes into the game.

LaGrange answered with 24:16 to play in the first half when Maddi Gay scored on a rebound to deadlock the score at 1-1.

At the 19:50 mark of the first half, freshman Sam Cottle headed the ball into the net for the go-ahead goal.

Less than two minutes later, Gay scored on a free kick for 40 yards out, and LaGrange led 3-1, and that was the score at the halftime break.

Five minutes into the second half, Tatum Fritchley converted a penalty kick, and LaGrange led 4-1.

With 30:16 to play, Emma Matthews took a free kick, and Fritchley got her foot on the ball and knocked it into the back of the net for what turned out to be the game’s final goal.

Kendrick’s game plan was to keep most of the players back on defense, and make sure there were plenty of obstacles between LaGrange’s players and the net.

“When you play a team that’s going to put eight players back, you’re going to have to go through a forest of players,” said LaGrange coach Andy Fritchley.
