The Callaway baseball team, taking a break from region competition this week, will try to earn a road win over the LaGrange Grangers on Wednesday.

Callaway (15-6 overall) improved to 7-3 in Region 5-AA with three wins over Haralson County last week, and it has two region games remaining.

This week, Callaway’s games are against non-region opponents, beginning with Wednesday’s showdown against LaGrange.

The Cavaliers lost to the Troup Tigers 4-0 earlier this season, so this will be their last chance to beat one of their two public-school county rivals.

Callaway did beat Lafayette Christian 4-1 in an early-season game.

While region positioning won’t be on the line against LaGrange, it’s still a game with a lot of attention, and it no doubt means a lot to the players.

“We just want to see the guys compete, and it’s good to see how the guys handle pressure,” said Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard.

“It doesn’t matter as far as the standings, but there’s pressure, so it’ll be a good test.”

Callaway finishes the week on Friday with a road game against another strong opponent, Central-Phenix City.

Callaway closes its region schedule with two games against Heard County next week.

The Cavaliers are in second place in the region, and if they finish there, they’ll host a first-round series in the state playoffs.

For LaGrange (15-8), it’s the first of two games against county rivals this week.

After playing Callaway, LaGrange will host Troup on Friday in a critical Region 2-AAAA showdown.

While Troup is in first place in the region with an 8-0 record, LaGrange is in second at 7-1.

LaGrange visits Troup on Monday before closing its region schedule with two games against Jordan.

LaGrange will likely need to beat Troup twice to finish first in the region.

The Grangers have won seven straight region games since losing to the Columbus Blue Devils 1-0 in their region opener.
