A LaGrange man has been arrested Wednesday night after he was seen walking in the area of West Point Road and Fling Road, pointing a handgun at citizens, sheriff deputies and himself.

According to a Troup County Sheriff’s Office press release, Quintavious Barthel, 36, walked south on West Point Road waving a pistol and pointing it in the direction of several motorists and deputies.

With their weapons drawn toward Barthel, deputies began giving verbal commands to him to drop the weapon. Several motorists were near the suspect at that time, so no shots were fired at that point, according to TCSO.

According to the press release, the suspect continued walking south on West Point Road while continuing to make threatening motions with the handgun. He then made a right on Teaver Road and entered a residential area. At that point, Barthel once again pointed the gun in the direction of the deputies, and a deputy made the decision to end the threat by striking Barthel with his patrol car.

Barthel immediately went to the ground and deputies placed him in custody and began rendering aid. A .22 caliber handgun was recovered with one round in the chamber and several unfired rounds in the magazine.

Barthel was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center for examination and then transported to the Troup County Jail where he is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated assault, four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
