Big weekend for Panthers

It was a take-no-prisoners weekend for the LaGrange College baseball team.

Facing USA South rival Maryville, LaGrange College swept a three-game series by a combined score of 44-13, and two of the games ended early because of the run rule.

The series opened on Friday, with LaGrange College rolling to a 19-6 victory in a game shortened to seven innings.

The teams played a doubleheader on Saturday, and LaGrange College won the opener 8-4 before finishing the sweep with a 17-3 victory in a seven-inning game.

The red-hot Panthers have won seven straight games to improve to 15-7 overall, and 7-1 in the USA South.

LaGrange College will be at home this weekend for a three-game USA South series against Brevard.

They’ll play a single game on Saturday at 7 p.m., and a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.

Here’s a look at the three games against Maryville:

GAME ONE

LAGRANGE 19, MARYVILLE 6

Trey Pearce had a huge game for the Panthers with four hits and four RBIs, and he had a three-run home run in the fifth inning.

Cael Chatham also had a big game with three hits and five RBIs, and Joe Ruth had two hits and n RBI.

E.J. Churchich, Matt Eden and David Smigelski each had a hit and an RBI, Rhett Hebert and Dustin Doscher had one RBI apiece, and Judd Moore and Rhett Mixon each had a hit.

Baley Coleman pitched the seven-inning complete game to get the win.

GAME TWO

LAGRANGE 8, MARYVILLE 4

Cael Chatham hit a solo home run and finished with three hits and two RBIs to lead the Panthers.

Joe Ruth had three hits including two doubles while driving in two runs, and McKinley Erves had a hit and two RBIs.

Trey Pearce had two hits with a triple, David Smigelski had an RBI and two walks, and Rhett Hebert and Rhett Mixon each had a hit.

J.R. Robinson started and pitched five innings to get the win, and Tanner Chafin pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Spencer Douches threw three scoreless innings to finish it and earn his fourth save of the season.

GAME THREE

LAGRANGE 17, MARYVILLE 3

Cael Chatham completed his monster series by driving in six runs as the Panthers finished off the sweep.

Chatham hit his second home run of the series, a grand slam in the first inning, and he had three hits and six RBIs.

For the series, Chatham had nine hits, two home runs, and 13 RBIs.

Joe Ruth had three hits with two doubles and two RBIs in the series finale, and McKinley Erves had three hits and an RBI.

Jared Aldridge had one hit and four RBIs, Rhett Mixon had one hit and two RBIs, Judd Moore had one hit and an RBI, E.J. Churchich had an RBI, and Jack Layrisson and Trey Pearce each had a hit.

Michael Menheart startd and pitched four innings to get the win, and Ethan Fry threw the next two innings. Brett Caneega pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish it.
