The Callaway Cavaliers are going to finish second in Region 5-AA, no matter what happens when they play the Heard County Braves on Tuesday.

That doesn’t mean the Cavaliers won’t go into the doubleheader lacking for motivation, though.

First of all, the games are against one of their biggest rivals, and the Cavaliers are also hoping to gain some momentum as they prepare for what they hope will be an extended run in the Class AA state playoffs.

After playing Heard County, Callaway has a road game against Northside-Columbus on Saturday before the state playoffs begin the following week.

“We’ve got to get some guys healthy, and we’ve got to get in a groove a little bit and be ready when the playoffs get here,” said Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard.

Callaway (16-7 overall) will carry a 7-3 Region 5-AA record into the doubleheader against Heard County.

Bremen, which won two of three games against Callaway, has won the region championship with an 11-1 record.

Callaway has secured the number two spot, while Haralson County and Heard County will finish third and fourth in the region

Callaway fell to 3-3 in the region when it lost back-to-back games to Bremen, but it hasn’t lost a region game since then.

Beginning with a 4-0 victory over Bremen, Callaway has won four straight region games, and that included a three-game sweep of Haralson County.

Overall, Callaway has won five of its past six games, and it bounced back from a loss to LaGrange with a 2-1 home win over Glenwood School on Friday.

Heard County, meanwhile, has struggled in region play, although it will finish fourth and advance to the state playoffs.

After losing twice to Haralson County on Friday, Heard County is 2-8 in the region, and it will finish fourth regardless of Tuesday’s outcome.
