Matt Brass remembered getting emotional when he saw the destruction a E-4 tornado left behind in Newnan, the District 28 Republican Senator’s hometown, in late March.

“It was my home,” Brass told the Kiwanis Club of LaGrange on Thursday where he attended as a guest speaker.

Brass represents Carroll, Coweta, Fulton, Heard and Troup counties in the Georgia Senate.

Prior to reminiscing about the damage on his home turf, Brass educated Kiwanis Club members about some of the aspects of the Election Integrity Act of 2021 that was passed following the turbulent 2020 presidential election.

Other topics Brass addressed included the overhaul of Georgia’s Citizen’s Arrest Law and the state’s stance on the production of CBD-based oil products.

“At a state level, there is more closeness than what you see on the news,” Brass said. “It’s a little bit worse than what it was four or five years ago, but it’s still a healthy environment where we can have conversations, find the common ground.” 

However, unity, Brass said, is what he saw during his visit to Newnan after the tornado. 

Neighbors near and far helped each other any way possible, he said, and no one “was asking who they were voting for.”

“Politics went out the window,” Brass said. 

“[The tornado] hit every home you can think of, every demographic … political party you could think of. Whether there was a Trump sign or a Biden sign in your yard, people did not care.”

Brass has served in the Georgia State Senate of 28th district since 2017.
