LaGrange’s Camp Cowpie, a Cub Scout Day Camp, is celebrating 50 years of outdoor fun and adventures this June.

Martha Evans, camp director, credits the camp’s longevity to its ability to supply campers with outside fun that creates lifetime memories.

“Our camp is about getting these kids outside and into nature, I really just want kids to love being outdoors and nature,” Evans said. “I want them to love camp as much as I do.”

The camp’s theme this year will explore the Native Americans of Camp Cowpie’s area.

“We had Native Americans living right here on the land where camp is. Arrowheads and other artifacts have been found here at Camp Cowpie,” Evans said. “Campers will enjoy learning about games the Native Americans played, how they built shelters and cared for their land.”

Evans has always focused Camp Cowpie on nature and the skills her campers can learn outdoors, as well as arts and crafts and archery.

“Children need to get outdoors to learn to appreciate nature just as the Native Americans did,” she said.

The camp will include special guests to share with the campers more about the theme. This year it plans to have the Order of Arrow demonstrate a ceremony for the campers.

“We try to incorporate the theme in all the activities for camp,” Evans said.

The camp is open to boys and girls entering second- fifth grades. Children do not have to be scouts to participate.

The camp will be held on June 7-11, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Evans Farm in LaGrange.
