The dead week has been a fixture in the state over the past several years, with the Georgia High School Association setting aside the week of July 4th as a time when high-school sports teams can’t hold organized activities.

This year, the GHSA has decided to add a second dead week to the calendar, and it takes place the week of Memorial Day.

The dead week began on Monday and will go through Sunday, and teams can resume or begin their summer workouts on June 7.

The second dead week will start on June 28 and go through July 4.

The summer is a busy time for teams in all sports with workouts, camps, scrimmages, and various other activities.

The dead weeks make sure that student-athletes and coaches get some time off before the school year begins.

“It’s great,” LaGrange head football coach Matt Napier said of the dead weeks. “The kids get a break. We’ve been working them really hard. We’ll have some time off, and then we’ll hit that weight room 100 mph.”

The summer is a particularly important time for the fall-sports teams, with those seasons beginning in August.

Practice for football, competitive cheerleading, softball and volleyball begins in early August.
