The Troup County School System doesn’t have as many students in its summer school programs as it was hoping but roughly 1700 students are participating.

Deana Brown, elementary curriculum director, and Jonathan Laney, secondary curriculum director, provided updates on the summer school programs at all levels at Monday night’s school board work session.

Brown said there are 783 elementary students participating at 10 different sites. A total of 69 certified teachers are helping out for the six-week program.

Laney said 278 students are participating in middle school and 639 students in high school.

“We are already scheduling a combined graduation at Troup for Callaway and Troup,” Laney said, noting that some students have already done what they need to do to graduate. “We are talking about possibly adding LaGrange, but those conversations are happening at the school level.”

Board Chairwoman Cathy Hunt asked if the middle school numbers were disappointing considering the number of participants was much lower.

Laney, who is new to his position after serving as Callaway High’s principal, said he’s not sure of the middle school’s goal, but he knew they didn’t get as many students as they wanted at the high school level.

“I know for high schools we are at 40 to 50 percent of where we wanted to be right now,” Laney said. “I know at Callaway High School we got about half the kids we wanted to get to summer school. That’s not unusual for summer school. These are large numbers for summer school, and we don’t typically get everybody.”

In other discussion at Monday’s meeting:

•  The district will vote Thursday to raise pay for environmental service workers after determining that the district’s pay was low when compared to other districts. The proposed increase will cost the district $150,000.

•  TCSS discussed approving contracts for school resource officers for the fiscal year 2022. The cost would be $225,101.76 to the city of LaGrange for officers at Gardner Newman Middle School, Hope Academy, LaGrange High School and Troup High School. TCSS would pay Troup County $168,826.32 for officers at Callaway Middle School, Long Cane Middle School and Callaway High School.

•  On Thursday, the board is expected to adopt the fiscal year 2021-2022 budget, which was tentatively approved in May.

•  The school board discussed paying the Troup County Archives $98,410 for records storage and records management services through June 30, 2022. This would be a continuation, as the archives currently stores TCSS records.
