He and his family moved to Knoxville after World War II where he attended East High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1958.  He attended the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1963 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He joined Milliken & Co. upon graduation, retiring as division President in 2003 after 40 years with the company.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Evelyn Hunter and his sister, Sally Hunter Thompson.

He chaired the United Way Fundraising Campaign in 1996 and was a member of the Lions Club of LaGrange.

Wayne was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing. He was an avid golfer and competitor playing with the “Sweet Sixteen” group at Highland Country Club. He was very proud of the three holes-in-one he made over his lifetime.
