It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Virgil Braxton Kirby of LaGrange, Georgia, who passed away on July 22, 2021 at Hope Center Memory Care in Fayetteville, GA. He was born on September 24, 1941 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late Theo Langford Kirby and Lucy Mae Kirby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Juanita Kirby Massey, Daphine Kirby Brown, Willodean (Dinky) Kirby Green, Dorothy (Dot) Kirby Newman, Mary Jo Kirby Bryant and Marthalene Kirby.

Known to many as Coach Kirby, he dedicated his life to helping others. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend. He graduated from Troup High School where he played football, holding several school football records. After high school, he attended LaGrange College where he received his Bachelor’s in Education and Auburn University where he did post graduate work. After college, he began his teaching career at LaGrange Boys Junior High where he also coached football and basketball. After retirement, he continued his work in education as a substitute teacher.

An avid sports fan, he loved football, basketball, and baseball. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his beloved granddaughter, Lillian. He attended Dunson Baptist Church for 38 years where he taught Sunday School, served as an usher and was a member of the van committee.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Josephine “Jo” Jones Kirby of LaGrange, Georgia; his daughter, Amber Kirby Cameron (Michael) of Montgomery, Alabama; his granddaughter, Lillian Beatrice Cameron of Montgomery, Alabama; his sister BJ Kirby of LaGrange, Georgia; his aunt, Nell Kirby Reagen of LaGrange, Georgia; sister-in-law, Faye Gregory Jones of McDonough, Georgia; brother-in-law, Jimmy Earl Jones of LaGrange, Georgia; nieces, nephews and extended family.

A private graveside service will be held Saturday, July 24, 2021 at the Jones Family Cemetery on Knott Road in LaGrange, GA. Rev. Kenneth Cole will officiate.
