This week, the Troup County School System welcomed over 100 new educators into the district at the new employee orientation, which was held at the Callaway Conference Center, according to Yolanda Stephen, TCSS director of public relations.

Prior to the event, attendees could talk to representatives from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and meet other new teachers.

Stephen said the event is annual.

“As we welcome new employees into the district, we share different things about our mission and our values,” she said.

“It takes about three years to really know what you are doing,” said TCSS Superintendent Dr. Brian Shumate, recalling his first few years in the classroom.

“I was lucky enough to work with some great teachers who formed an early version of a Professional Learning Community where we were able to help each other and be responsible for all kids we taught.”

After Shumate’s welcoming message, LaGrange High students performed two songs, Callaway High cheerleaders performed cheers and choreographed dances, and Troup High drama students performed numbers from the play, “Matilda.” Stephen said this was the first time all three high schools performed at the annual orientation.

According to Stephen, it’s normal for the school district to take on about 80 to 100 new educators each year.

“We’re excited for the school year to start,” she said. “We’re looking forward to seeing our students as we begin the new year and welcome our new teachers in. And we’re here to help them with whatever they need.”

This week, students can meet their teachers at designated times shared by their schools. For students, school begins Monday, Aug. 9.

According to the Professional Association of Georgia Educators website, PAGE is Georgia’s largest association for educators. It provides educators with professional learning to enhance their competence, confidence and leadership skills so as to improve student achievement.

The website says PAGE provides “the best” in membership, legislative and legal support.
