The LaGrange, Callaway and Troup softball teams would all love to win a few games this weekend, but they’ll come together Saturday for a reason much more important than the final result on the scoreboard.

This Saturday, the softball teams from those local high schools will go head-to-head in the annual Hope for a Day Tournament and are hoping to raise awareness and funding for breast cancer research and support.

“It’s really just a way to come in for a good cause,” said Gabby Heath, the head coach of the LaGrange High girls’ softball team. “I guess there are bragging rights, but nothing [competitive.]”

This will be Luke Bailey’s, the head coach of the Callaway High girls’ softball team, first year participating in the tournament, he said. His team is ready for a good game.

“We’re trying to continue the momentum we’ve had from the last few games,” Bailey said.

For Ryan Simpson of the head coach of the Troup High girls’ softball team, her hope is to be able to play — let alone win — following a rough start to her team’s season.

“All of our games this week have been canceled,” Simpson said. “We’ve only played one game so far this year and that was the Callaway Classic.”

Still, her team has practiced all summer they feel they’re ready to conquer the field.

“The girls have friends on Callaway’s and LaGrange’s teams,” she said. “They get excited to play each other because they all play travel ball together. It’s an easygoing type of tournament as well as raising money for breast cancer.”

Troup and LaGrange will be the first to play at 10 a.m., Troup and Callaway will play at 12 p.m. and LaGrange and Callaway play at 2 p.m.

At the beginning of each game, a breast cancer survivor will enter the field and throw the first pitch, Heath said.

The tournament has been going on for at least 10 years, Heath said.
