Earlier this week, we wrote that it was disappointing that there were so few on the ballot for LaGrange citizens. Only one race in the city is contested.

We also said that Hogansville voters have plenty of choices, which is a great thing.

Well, the same is also true for the vacant Troup County Commission seat. Five qualified to fill the seat filled by Richard English for over 40 years.

That’s a great thing, and we look forward to covering this election and all of the candidates involved.

Kendall Butler, Travis Hart, Jimmy McCamey, Norma Tucker and Ernest Ward — many of them names you probably know — should make the election interesting. Like the municipal elections, this election will be on Nov. 2.

English left big shoes to fill, something we’ve covered in this space several times. He’s going to be a tough act to follow.

But we’re encouraged that so many people had an interest in filling that seat and put themselves out into the public eye in an attempt to serve the citizens of Troup County.

Running for public office takes a lot of courage. Although we all feel like we have the answers, very few people actually step forward and try to solve problems for our community.

So, to the five people running for commission — and all other election qualifiers — we say thank you.

We look forward to covering the campaigns over the next few months as we lead into the election cycle.
