An American Medical Response paramedic was killed and a second was seriously injured Saturday while trying to help someone injured in a crash on Interstate 85.

James Wade, 32, of Monroe, Georgia was killed when a truck rammed into a crashed car on the interstate, causing the vehicle to hit him and his co-worker.

The accident occurred at mile marker 5.

The paramedics were traveling in a box truck with no emergency equipment, transporting medical supplies for hurricane relief efforts in Louisiana when they spotted an accident.

Georgia State Patrol Post 2 LaGrange had been requested to investigate the accident at 1:55 a.m. but had not arrived yet.

A Kia Forte had left the roadway and struck the center median cable barrier. Wade and his partner had parked on the shoulder of the highway and crossed the road on foot to render aid to the driver. While they were triaging the driver’s injuries on the driver side of the vehicle, a Dodge pickup truck struck the rear of the Kia Forte, causing the vehicle to hit both paramedics.

The paramedics were transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, and the driver and passenger of the Dodge pickup truck were life-flighted to Columbus Piedmont.

“We are heartbroken,” AMR Regional Director Chris Valentin said in a statement to AMR’s Georgia teams, according to AMR’s website.

“Logan was a longtime AMR team member who always stepped up to help others. He stopped at this accident to help people in need, as he was selflessly headed to a disaster area. These acts are a testament to Logan’s commitment to his profession.”

GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the crash investigation.
