Mrs. Cheris Jones English passed away Friday.

She was born July 3, 1933 to the late Willie and Janie Jones in Thomasville, Georgia.

She attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and attained her bachelor of arts degree in social studies and music education. She received her master’s of education degree in social studies from West Georgia College.

She began her teaching career at East Depot High School, and then moved to LaGrange High School.

Cheris met and married Richard English, Jr. of Ft. Gaines, Georgia. They were married for over sixty years; they united with First Baptist Church on Fannin Street.

Survivors include four grandsons: Derrick Matthews, Jr., Richard Carter Matthews, Christian Matthews and Caden Matthews, of Atlanta; granddaughter, Tomekka (Troy) Davis and her children of North Carolina; son-in-love, Derrick Matthews, Sr.; two sisters-in-law: Roselle English Moody and Susan English Taylor, of Ft. Gaines, Georgia; one brother-in-law, Barley English of Miami; and a host of  nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.

The public viewing will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. The service will be Saturday at 12 p.m. Both services will take place in the chapel of Lakes-Dunson-Robertson Funeral Home.
