The LaGrange postal service community came together earlier this week to honor the late Jenny Marterella, who died in an ATV accident over the weekend.

Marterella, 56, had worked for the United States Postal Service for nearly 30 years, and it’s clear she will be greatly missed.

During this pandemic, we think everyone has learned to appreciate the jobs people do — people that we probably took for granted. That includes retail workers, who stock the shelves of necessary groceries; janitors, who clean an area to ensure we aren’t getting germs; fast food workers, who provide a quick meal when we’re on the go; and many, many more. Our postal service workers fall in that unappreciated category too. It’s amazing that when you talk about the post office, you often hear negative comments or talk about the inefficiencies they face.

But for the most part, our mail almost always gets delivered on time. Postal workers drive all around town, trying to deliver mail as vehicles race past them, many of them not even touching their brakes.

Our postal service workers also work long hours, often starting early in the day. Some deliver packages late into the evenings, especially as we move into the Christmas season. We appreciate all of the work they do, even if they don’t often get the credit they deserve.

Many of them were even unable to attend Marterella’s service so that they could ensure they got their jobs done.

Marterella will be missed by all those who knew her and she was clearly beloved by her co-workers.

We thank all postal workers for the jobs they do every day. The work doesn’t go unnoticed.
