The LaGrange Youth Council elected its officers for the 2021-2022 school year Tuesday (10/19) evening. The council also voted on their three main priorities for the year.

The new officers include Chairperson Milly Criswell (LaGrange High School Senior), Vice-Chairperson Addie Eiland (LaGrange High School Senior), Historian Kate Asbell (LaGrange High School Senior) and Secretary Katy Beth Bedingfield (LaGrange High School Senior).

The council also voted to focus its efforts on three priorities this year — mental health awareness, mentorship and sustainability. The group will be divided into three committees and each committee will focus on developing a project that will positively impact the community.

The new committee chairs include LaGrange Youth Council Mentorship Committee Chairperson Sydney Edelson (LaGrange High School Senior), Sustainability Committee Chairperson Devin Dents (LaGrange High School Chairperson) and Mental Health Committee Chairperson Riley Whitlow (LaGrange Academy Senior).

The LaGrange Youth Council is an advisory board composed of local youth that provides advice and counsel to the local governing body. The youth council gives local youth a more formal role in the local decision-making process offering real-world experiences with elected bodies.

Students from LaGrange High, Troup High, LaGrange Academy, Thinc Academy, Lafayette Christian School and Heard County High School are participating in the LaGrange Youth Council for the 2021-2022 school year.

Members are required to participate in one of the city’s “Leaving LaGrange Better Than We Found It” litter cleanups during the year and attend a LaGrange City Council meeting.
