Vaunita Allen Ashmore, wife of George Ashmore, of Union, peacefully passed away Saturday Oct. 30, 2021.

Vaunita was born on Feb. 14, 1932, in Sylacauga, Alabama and is preceded in death by her mother Annie Mae Allen, and sister, Ann Allen Smith. She grew up in LaGrange, Georgia, and graduated from LaGrange High School.

On July 16, 1953, she wed George Ashmore at Trinity Methodist Church and moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where George served in the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson during the Korean Conflict. They lived on Park Street, and she worked at the New York Life Insurance building on Main Street.

In March 1960, after the birth of their first child, they moved to Union, South Carolina. Together she and George created a life and a home for their four children, Marianne, George, Jerry and William Ashmore.

Vaunita was a Master Gardener and enjoyed preparing delicious home-cooked meals and desserts for her family made from vegetables and fruits from their garden. She baked homemade biscuits daily and delighted when her grandchildren would help her in the kitchen. Vaunita was a lifelong supporter of the Girl Scouts and served as the “cookie monster” for Union County.

A member of Bethel United Methodist Church, she was active in the United Methodist Women and loved her circle meetings. A certified lay leader, she attended the South Carolina Annual Conference for several years. She also served as the Daycare Director at Bethel. She faithfully volunteered in the church kitchen, tended the flowers on the church grounds, participated in Sunday School, and served with Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed playing bridge, doing ceramics, reading, journaling, birdwatching, and spending time with her family, especially on their annual summer vacations to Fripp Island.

Vaunita is survived by her husband, George Ashmore and children, Marianne (Mike) Haney of Prosperity, George Jr. (Jean) of Landrum, Jerry (Tina) of Port Royal, William (Janet) Ashmore of Newberry; grandchildren, Rett and Josh Haney, Daniel (Lily) and Jacob Ashmore, Ellie, Katie, Tori Ashmore, Amanda (Jacob) Woolsey and Sean (Kate) Roos; Ady, Sam and Ben Ashmore; great-grandchildren, Tucker and Cameron Posey, Tyler and Gianna Woolsey, Ben and Owen Roos.

Visitation will take place 11 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Union, South Carolina. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021, conducted by the Rev. Merritt Wentz at Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Ady Ashmore, Sam Ashmore, Ben Ashmore, Daniel Ashmore, Rett Haney and Josh Haney. Honorary pallbearer will be Jacob Ashmore.
