One week from now, District 5 on the Troup County Commission will now have a new representative.

Jimmy McCamey and Norma Tucker are vying for that seat, which is known for being held by Richard English for 43 years.

Through Saturday, there had been less than 130 total votes in this election. We expected turnout to be low. This is a race where only people who live in District 5 can vote, so that’s going to keep vote totals down.

However, when you throw in the holiday and all that comes with it, it makes it even more likely that the total number of votes cast is going to be very low.

If you live in District 5, we encourage you to take advantage of your opportunity to vote early. Soon, the turkey will be in the oven, family will be on the way and voting — and other things you’ll “get to later” — will go out the window.

There’s still time left, and there’s also Election Day on Tuesday, where polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

We think both candidates would agree that if he were here today English would want every single registered voter in that district to exercise their right to vote.

Whoever wins this race will have a say in important decisions, such as which projects the county takes on, how money is spent and what becomes a priority.

We know there’s a lot going on this week. We all have a lot going on.

But that’s not a reasonable excuse to forget to vote.
