The Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), in partnership with the National Weather Service and the Georgia Department of Transportation, has declared December 6-10 as Winter Weather Preparedness Week.

According to a recent Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security news release, WWPW is designed to promote awareness of winter weather hazards, reinforce understanding of winter weather terminology, and encourage Georgians to learn about and prepare for winter weather threats.

“Georgia is entering a season where we have to be ready ahead of time for frost, snow and ice,” said GEMA/HS Director Chris Stallings.

“That’s why participating in WWPW is a chance for our residents to prepare and educate themselves on what to do before, during, and after a potential winter storm event,” Stallings said.

GEMA/HS has recently distributed winter weather preparedness information to local emergency management directors; these materials will be shared on Troup County’s social media platforms for the duration of the WWPW campaign. As residents prepare for this time of year, the county would like to remind all citizens to sign up for CivicReady, its Emergency Notification System that keeps the community informed with severe weather updates.
