1938-2022

Peggy was born March 4, 1938, in Mountville, Georgia, the daughter of the late Viola and Rueben Pattillo. She was raised in LaGrange, Georgia and lived in many locations during her life.

Peggy had several professional roles but spent most of her career working at AAFES, even returning to college and moving to Dallas, Texas to further her position. She retired at the age of 58 and moved to her hometown of Lagrange, Georgia to be near her family. Peggy was a hard worker and believed idle hands were the devil’s workshop, so she stayed busy volunteering at many organizations including The Clothes Closet at The First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and the West Georgia Hospice. In addition, she spent significant time dedicated to the First Baptist on the Square in LaGrange where she was a member. She cherished her time teaching Children’s Sunday School, Choir and Vacation Bible School and kept every memento any child ever made for her. She also cooked many meals including her famous chicken and dumplings for the church’s bereavement committee. She did not say no to anyone who needed her help. She also never turned away any hungry animals including stray cats, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, and the occasional possum. She was an avid gardener and a beautiful seamstress. Most of all, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother, always there with her support, love, and care. She was selfless, faithful, and forgiving to all. She lived by a clear code of what was right and wrong. She taught her children by example how to work hard, how to treat people and to always tell the truth. She was our moral compass. She will be missed by the many people who loved her.

Peggy leaves behind her husband, Gordon Steger, three children Joy Thompson (Johnny), Ed Gable and Angela Stallings (David), grandchildren Alicia Bonner, Drew Gable (Stephanie), Mitch Stallings, Grant Stallings, and Emily Thompson (Peyton Brinson) and two great-grandchildren Taylor and Brayden Bonner. She is also survived by her twin sister Polly Adams and her sister-in-law and friend Dorothy Pattillo, multiple nieces and nephews including Donna Stone who was there for her when she needed her most.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Wesley Woods, especially Sophia Ballard, as well as Allison Manning of Homestead Hospice, for their love and kindness shown to our mother.

The family will receive friends at Higgins Funeral Home at Hunter-Allen-Myhand on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, from 5- 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel the following day, Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. The committal service will directly follow the funeral and will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens in LaGrange.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to LaGrange – Troup County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1351, LaGrange, Georgia, 30241 (https://lagrangehumane.org/donate/) or a no-kill animal shelter of choice.
