It was with great sadness that the family of Janice Marie Hankey (Davis) of Estill, South Carolina announce her passing on Monday, January 17, 2022, in her home under the care of Agape Care Hospice surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren.
Janice was born on Sept. 29, 1943, in LaGrange, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late James Gason Davis and Joyce Orene Davis. She graduated from Troup County High School.
After high school she moved to Atlanta, Georgia and started working at Link-Belt Company where she me her husband, Paul Hankey. Paul and Janice married on May 13, 1966, at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Upon Paul’s graduation from the Georgia Institute of Technology, they made numerous moves during their married life, including Minnepolis, Memphis, Cedar Rapids, Fayettevill and Raleigh. While in Cedar Rapids, she gave birth to her first child, Chris Hakey, and almost three years later while living in Fayetteville, she gave birth to her daughter, Cara Grimes (Hankey). In 1984, the family moved to Estill, South Carolina, where they have resided since.
Janice devoted her life to her family and was a loving wife, other and grandmother. Despite her hectic schedule with her family, she worked with the Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) Program for many years and retired as the GAL county Coordinator for Hampton and Allendale Counties. She was an advocate for children in need and helped give many a chance for a better life. Janice was also an active members of Estill Presbyterian Church where she was an faithful member for over 37 years.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Paul Hankey, a son, Chris Hankey (Stephanie), and a daughter, Cara Grimes (Shawn); grandchildren, Eli Hankey, Rachel Hankey and Olivia Grimes; sister Brenda Benefiled (Donnie), brother, Mike Davis as well as nieces Cathy Clamage (Steve) and Angela Ellinwood (Brad). Janice is preceded by her parents, James and Joyce Davis and sister Judy Thornhill (Art).
A Celebration of Life service for Janice Hankey will be held at Estill Presbyterian Church in Estill, South Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at 2 p.m. ET with the Rev. Dr. Donnie Woods and the Rev. Linda Kelly officiating.
A family graveside memorial service will be held on a future date at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
