The Sock Hops return to the Troup High Fine Arts Auditorium Saturday to perform music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The event is sponsored by the Troup High Alumni association and tickets are currently on sale for $15.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.
The event is open to all community members and homemade treats will be available during the show.
Ellis Cadenhead, founder of the Troup High Alumni association, said this is an opportunity for citizens to relive some of their favorite songs.
“It is just a great opportunity to relive the past as far as the music is concerned,” Cadenhead said.
“If anybody would like to dance, there is the area we have that they can dance.”
Shane Frailey, the current president of the alumni association, said he has enjoyed each time the Sock Hops come to THS. However, his favorite moment each year is when the two scholarships are awarded in honor of his classmate and friend, Walter Thompson.
“The biggest thing that I love is each year we give away two $1,000 scholarships in memory of Walter “Big Earl” Thompson. That’s one of my greatest tributes to being in the alumni association,” Frailey said. “He was in the FFA, so we did that in honor of him.”
Frailey said the money raised by this event will go toward giving back to the students and faculty of THS.
“What we do is the teachers or the students will come before our association and request funds to be used in different ways. We sent kids to Macy’s Day Parade, Rose Bowl parade,” Frailey said. “We’ve done numerous things. We’ve sent kids to the skill labs. We bought flags for the drill team.”
Hilda Railey, the vice president of the alumni association, said concert-goers should make sure to check out the homemade treats for sale at the event.
“There will be a variety of cookies or brownies. sometimes somebody will make peanut brittle or some kind of candies,” Railey said.
“Everything is homemade and then they have drinks too.”
Railey said she will be bringing her heavily requested Coca-Cola cake this year.
“There is coke in the batter and coke in the icing. It’s a chocolate cake with a chocolate icing,” Railey said.
Railey said she loves to watch community members reminisce each year as they watch the show.
“I enjoy watching the people that come to see the show. I enjoy watching them enjoy it,” Railey said. “[It] brings back a lot of memories, and you’ll hear people talking about it during the half time, reminiscing of the good times.”
Tickets can be purchased at Troup High School, LaGrange Toyota, Landscape Supply of LaGrange and Weather’s Honda. For any questions regarding tickets or the event, contact Ellis Cadenhead at (706) 713-4564.
