1925 – 2022

Theresa “Tee” Borders, 96, passed away peacefully at Wellstar West Georgia Hospice, Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022.

Born Theresa Von den Berg Hug March 7, 1925, to Henry Bernard and Myrtle Tolliver (Huggie) Hug Woolbright at Ft. Benning, Georgia, where her father was based and later employed, her recollections of that special childhood were collected as part of the Donovan Research Library Oral History Project and are available on the internet.   After graduating Columbus High in 1941 she attended Auburn University where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, elected Queen of the May, and was graduated in 1945 with a degree in Business Administration.  While there she met the brother of a sorority sister, John P. Borders, and they were married Oct.9, 1946. 

After a period as homemaker and mother she worked for and retired from the State Department of Family and Children Services helping to place children in foster care and arranging adoptions during which time she attended West Georgia College where she earned an M.P.A.  in 1987.

She was an enthusiastic member of the First United Methodist Church’s Mary Will Thompson Class, active for years on the Altar Guild, a member of the United Methodist Women, and actively involved in numerous outreach programs of the Church.

She was a member of the Pine Needle Garden Club, a Master Gardener, a Master Flower Show Judge and a Red Cross Certified Nursing Aide.  She was a volunteer at Callaway Gardens where she especially enjoyed providing historical and botanical descriptions to those visiting the Ida Cason Calloway Memorial Chapel.  She was a volunteer in support of the Troup County Literacy Project, helping adults learn to read.

She enjoyed playing in a bridge club and was often called to play at Bellevue helping others learn the game.  She took advantage of the many programs offered through the Active Life Center, including portrait painting, and she loved playing mahjong with all the friends she made at the Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband John P. Borders (2014), her infant son, Clayton (1952), and her sisters Frances (Hug) Sylvester (2010) of Opelika, Alabama and Mary Lee (Hug) Becton (2004) of Little Rock, Arkansas.

She is survived by her children John Pierce Borders, Jr. (Susanne) of Wadley, Alabama, Thomas Henry Borders (Belinda) of LaGrange, Georgia and Rosanna Miller Borders (Kathy) of Fortson, Georgia;  her grandchildren, Thomas Borders of Enigma, Georgia, Matthew Borders (Gina) of Temple, Georgia, Christopher Borders (Jillian) of Annapolis Maryland and Anna (Borders) Queller (Alex) of Centreville, Maryland; her great-grand children, Allison and Matthew Borders of Temple, Georgia, Gabrielle Pfeifer, Max and Simon Queller of Centreville Maryland and John Callahan Borders of Annapolis, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews and their families, including Virginia (Jenny) and Jeff Miller of LaGrange, Georgia.

She will be remembered for her faith, her kind and caring spirit, and her love of others.

A family graveside service will be held Monday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. in Shadowlawn Cemetery LaGrange, Georgia, followed by a 2 p.m. service in the main sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church in LaGrange, after which family will receive friends in Wesley Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be directed to Community Care Program, First United Methodist Church, 401 Broad St, LaGrange, Georgia, 30240 or to the Troup County Active Life Center, 140 Ragland St, LaGrange, Georgia, 30241.
