On Wednesday, local law enforcement agencies and the Troup County School System updated a Handle with Care agreement, which is meant to ensure children dealing with a traumatic event are treated accordingly at school.

Basically, if a child is involved in something traumatic that happens with law enforcement, then information is sent to the school that child attends. No specifics are given, but the school is told that the child is dealing with something that could be impacting his or her schoolwork or behavior, so they should handle with care.

On Wednesday, the updated added the Troup County Marshal’s Office to the agreement, since that office deals with animal calls that could impact students.

Judge Michael Key, as well as the law enforcement officials involved, deserve a lot of credit for their role in this. It makes all of the sense in the world.

We need to do all we can to ensure our children are successful when at school, and if a child starts acting up out of character, it could have to do with something going on at home.  Thankfully, because of this agreement, that child’s teacher will be aware something is going on and can adjust his or her reaction.

We applaud our law enforcement and school system for taking this approach.
