The LaGrange High School boys’ basketball team dominated its crosstown rivals Troup County for the second time this season by a final score of 72-41 on Saturday.

The game was no longer in doubt, but when Jay Dunn dunked over two defenders with five minutes to go, the crowd went into an absolute frenzy. 

The second the buzzer sounded for the final time, the LaGrange players ran and jumped into the student section. Head Coach Mark Veal knows how much this game means to his team and his school.

“It’s more than just the Troup game obviously,” he said. “Last night was senior night so hopefully over the last two days they’ve got all the emotional stuff out of it.”

The arena was near maximum occupancy as supporters from both schools came out to watch their team in this county rivalry. This is the third straight win in the rivalry for LaGrange; the team’s split their two meetings last season.

Troup County only scored 13 points in the first half as their offense struggled to get going. They were able to increase the pace in the third quarter-scoring 20, but it was too late to get back in the game.

For the Troup County Tigers, the smallest player on the court played much bigger than his stature. Campbell scored five of the Tigers six points in the first quarter en route to a game high 17 points. 

Devin Dowell and Jakobe Jones led the way for the Grangers offensively with both players finishing with a team high 13 points. The Grangers spread the wealth on offense and ended the game with 11 players in the scoring column. The Grangers pushed the pace and played at their tempo, but Veal saw room for improvement.

“Rebounding, taking care of the ball, not settling for shots, but hopefully that will come,” he said.

LaGrange improves to 19-4 overall and 12-2 in the region. LaGrange hosts the No. 5 team in the state, Spencer, on Feb. 8 for their next game.

Troup County drops to 3-17 and 3-12 in the region. The Tigers next game is their last of the regular season as the travel to take on Jordan on Feb. 11.
